I’m doing the final research double-checking for Storm Singing (the third Fabled Beast book) this month, and I spent today calling serious proper academics at St Andrews University and Edinburgh University about selkies and mermaids! To be honest, that’s not what I said to them, not at the start. I began with perfectly sensible questions about how long grey seals can stay underwater, and about fish scales and tails. And only once they had told me what I needed to know, or confirmed what I already thought, did I admit that I was writing about magical creatures, so I thanked the seal researcher for helping me create the perfect selkie and the fish expert for helping me create the ideal mermaid! I do like to make sure that my fantasy is firmly fact-based and believable…

We have been reading First Aid for Fairies and Other Fabled Beasts and have enjoyed it very very much! Some of us are already planning to read Wolf Notes and we very excited that you are writing a new quest for our favourite characters. We are looking forward to meeting you on Thursday.
I’m looking forward to meeting you too, and if you want, I can bring the manuscript for Storm Singing (the third Fabled Beast book) and all the scribbly maps I’ve drawn to make sure the quests seem realistic – or as realistic as anything with mermaids and seamonsters can ever be… See you soon! Lari
Thank you for the offer, we would be very interested to see your new manuscript and your notes. We use pictures to help us plan our stories but we keep them short so we don’t have to do as much research as you do!

I would like to say thanx for the book wolf notes because it made me start reading and going back to the libary and thanx for the note and signiture im very happy!!
I’d love to see what you do with unicorns! Any chance we’ll see one or more in this series?
Strangely, the original idea for First Aid for Fairies arrived on the back of a unicorn, but I’ve never really been keen on the idea of writing about unicorns, because they have a bit of a girly and glittery reputation. Though the original unicorns in stories are quite macho and aggressive – fighting with lions and combatting poison. So a real traditional unicorn might come in handy. So good idea, I’ll think about it for the next book…
See, I always counted unicorns among my imaginary friends (I recall one particularly awesome daydream in which the Martians were after me, and the Unicor, whose name I’ve forgotten, charged their spaceship horn-first and blew it up!) So I’ve never felt that Unicorns are particularly girly.
